In 2017, the Victorian Government passed retrospective and world first legislation to enable all donor conceived people born in Victoria, no matter when they were born, access to the identity of the donors used in their conception. This has been referred to and known as “Narelle’s Law” in honour of Donor conceived person and advocate Narelle Grech who died from a heritable bowel cancer in 2013.
Narelle had been an advocate for many years, searching for her donor and lobbying for change alongside other donor conceived people in their pursuit for meaningful legislative change. Narelle is a very important person in the history of donor conception in Australia and her efforts and story are crucial in the momentum of change occurring in Australia towards openness and access to information.
